Thar Be Dragons!

While traveling in China Ray bought me a pearl bracelet with little gold beads. The clasp was a gold dragon biting its tail. Mr. Dragon had ruby eyes.

We had a break-in at our old house a couple of years ago, so now someone else owns my lovely bracelet. The clasps above are the closest I've found, but they're only sterling with no rubies.
Anyone know where to find a gold dragon?

Thanks!

Art Beads Muse Contest IV

The 'Use the Muse' kit 4 beads and treasures were mailed today. I expect to receive mine Thursday or Friday if the Post Office doesn't get it hung up somewhere along the way. I think my mail lady enjoys my beading magazines, because quite a few never arrive.

Except for County and State fairs, this is the first contest I have ever entered. I know there are far better beaders out there, but I'll try not to embarrass anyone. ;o)

If you should see a strange woman hanging onto her mail box, it will probably be me!

Hallowe'en Is Coming!

What Is Halloween?

The word Halloween is from Hallowe'en (1. According to the Irish English dictionary published by the Irish Texts Society: the Night of the Winter Calends, signalizing the close of harvest and the initiation of the winter season, lasting till May 2. Scottish Gaelis Dictionary defines it as Hallowtide. The Feast of All Soula. end of summer.). This is a contraction of All Hallows Eve, or the night before the 'All Hallows', also called 'All Hallowmas', or 'All Saints', or 'All Souls' Day. In old English the word 'Hallow' meant 'sanctify'.

Some History on Halloween Festival!

The festival was first celebrated on February 21, the end of the Roman year. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV introduced All Saints' Day to replace the pagan festival of the dead on May 13. Later, Gregory III changed the date to November 1.

Despite this connection with the Roman Church, the American version of Halloween Day celebration owes its origin to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. To them, this day marked the end of summer, harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, that was often associated with death. Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future which were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

During the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins and attempts to make prophecies. After the celebration, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years of rule on the Celtic lands, two festivals Feralia (commemorated the passing of the dead) and Pomona (Roman goddess of fruit and trees), were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

By the 800s, Christianity influence had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Beads and Beading Supplies

I have been asked by several people what beads, tools, stringing materials, etc. are needed to start a business.

Let me tell you, you are treading on dangerous ground! I am a beader with no bead shops. How sad! The closest one is about 200-250 miles away. I have only had the opportunity to visit 4 bead shops in my entire life. So, my answer to your questions is to buy everything you can get your hands on. Know what the online shops have and look for it in stores so you can see what the bead really looks like, then buy online because the prices are so much better.

I like to buy my focal pieces from shops, so I know for sure what I'm getting. I'd hate to tell you what my bills are at one of the shops! Thank Heavens it's 600 miles away and doesn't have a web site.

For tools, buy one of the kits at Hobby Lobby or Michael's. Use these until you know which tools you really need and like, then buy the best you can afford.

For delicas, I try to keep about 50 colors on hand, but there are still some that I need desperately and have to order. The same with the Miyukis. For gem stones, I rarely know what I'll need, so I try to keep lots on hand. I would much prefer to buy them in person, even if they
do cost more, but this isn't a viable thing for me to do.

The Best of Luck to You - and your bank account!

Kazuri Beads

Kazuri ceramic beads are from Nairobi, Kenya. Each bead is shaped individually by hand without the aide of molds, forms, or any modern machinery. The beads are painted with high gloss paint, then glazed & fired to produce a smooth, shiny decorated product that is very durable. Kazuri is Swahili for "small and beautiful".

Kazuri Ltd. is a member of the Fair Trade Federation. Kazuri pays it employees three and a half times the national wage in Kenya plus providing free health care and day care. With staggering unemployment rates, one job holder often supports up to 20 members of their extended families.

Yep! That's Me!

I didn't think I looked quite that bad, but I happened past a mirror this morning - argh!

I've been working deadlines the past 2 weeks. I hate that! I'd rather just put things on my Etsy site - http://www.r2swanger.etsy.com . In these days of unemployment, one must take orders as they come along.

My mind seems to have left me, as well. I have more than $2,000 worth of beads sitting in front of me that I've ordered in the last couple of weeks. Dummy forgot to order needles and toggle clasps.

I'm putting together new kits that will be on my website - as soon as I have enough to make a decent presentation. I have ideas coming like mad, but, because I can't draw, they leave my brain before I can get even a little piece made.

I'm preparing jewelry for a wedding this weekend. The bride's coordinator specifically asked for me!!!!! It's a great honor, but a huge responsibility. I'm also embroidering purses for the wedding party.

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day. I was recovering from the flu and spent the last few days lazing around eating chicken pot pies. They aren't bad when you don't have anything else~

Happy Days!

Swarovski Crystal Jewelry

After three years of wearing my Swarovski crystal jewelry non-stop, I began to notice a slightly milky appearance to the crystals. After much research, I ordered the above kit directly from Swarovski.

All things considered, my Swarovski jewelry has held up very well. I wear it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I sleep in it, swim in it, garden in it,etc.

Using PowerCord or FireLine, I have never had a piece to break. I'm finding more and more that people prefer the streatchiness of PowerCord so that bracelets are easy to put on and remove.

Somewhere along the way, I acquired some 3mm cubic zirconia bicones. Much too small for PowerCord. I strung the beads with curly letters and knotted it. The letters hang in everything and the cord stretches to many times its size, but has yet to break. Got to find out what that stuff is!

I couldn't wait to finish my new Hallowe'en bracelet,
but the flu got in the way.

I finally finished it yesterday afternoon
about the time that Ray got home from work.

The Peyote band is made from my special
Indian Corn Blend.
There are several shades and textures of yellow, gold, orange,
red, green, brown, silver, and black.
The blend will be available in my Etsy shop early next year.

A kit for the bracelet may be available if I can find a reliable
supplier of Halloween charms.

The web site for my jewelry kits is
http://www.beadkits.etsy.com

It is sorely lacking in products right now,
but it should fill up soon!

Happy Halloween!

Wedding Jewelry

My niece is getting married tomorrow
and I thought you all might like to see the jewelry I will be wearing.
I, of course, made all of the pieces myself.
What fun to have people compliment the pieces that I have made,
all the while thinking that they were purchased
at an expensive boutique!
